In the ninth grade, an advisory curriculum helps teachers talk to students about common freshman issues, like time management, how to build relationships with other students and social aspects, like finding the right extracurricular activity. Ideally, teachers take time out of classroom instruction to talk to students about the transition to high school.

  • In 8th grade, students read fiction and nonfiction from many time periods and cultures by the time they begin 9th grade they are expected to be critical readers and decide whether information makes sense or seems correct
  •  High school courses often have fewer assignments than middle school, but each assignment represents a larger part of the overall grade. This means the time spent on homework or studying for a test is especially important

  • High school requires students to take a more active, independent role in their studies.
  • The social environment in high school is different and often larger, which can be challenging for students.
  • Students often have to deal with new academic and social expectations at the same time
