State University of New York (SUNY)

State University of New York (SUNY): SUNY will partner with the NYGEAR UP project to increase students’ awareness of education opportunities available at through SUNY. These experiences will include college visits, on-campus activities in the arts and/or athletics, workshops and, where possible, experiential learning opportunities and will serve to motivate participants to pursue higher education, foster a sense of belonging on the campuses, and increase awareness of the variety of campus types and academic offerings in SUNY. SUNY will sponsor at least three campus visits each year for each NYGEAR UP site. Campus visits for first- and second-year students will be general in nature, and will include general tours of the campus, presentations by students, and/or participation in engaging, hands-on activities. When possible, SUNY will arrange for NYGEAR UP students to attend age-appropriate events on SUNY campuses, ranging from athletic events to theater performances. These events will be paired with college information sessions. This will serve the dual purpose of increasing enthusiasm for the undergraduate experience and providing information about the campus. In addition, SUNY will provide GEAR UP students, their families and teachers with grade-specific student college readiness workshops; regional college fairs; on-site college application assistance for students; virtual/in person financial aid counseling, parent workshops ranging from social media awareness to college application completion; literacy professional development and for all stakeholders, the eligibility and value of SUNY’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). The EOP program provides access, academic support and financial aid to students who show promise for succeeding in college but may not meet regular admission requirements.
