CICU is a statewide association representing more than 100 independent (private nonprofit) colleges and universities across the state of New York, the largest independent sector in the nation, enrolling 480,000 students. Partnering with NYGEAR UP on the1999, 2005 and 2014 grants, CICU will sponsor trips to residential colleges in grades 7 – 12 and in grade 11, students will visit approximately four campuses in overnight college trips. Coupled with regional college fairs, CICU will offer workshops focused on academic/career readiness, college admissions and financial aid. To focus on improving outcomes and English language proficiency, NYGEAR UP project schools will be matched with CICU School of Education institutions that offer education preparation programs (EPPs) in bilingual education, TESOL or literacy. The EPP will provide PD to the school in areas of English language acquisition and in turn, the school will accept placements of the EPP’s student teachers enrolled in a program identified above for fieldwork or student teaching. In addition, CICU will coordinate with Liberty Partnership (LPP), Science and Technology Program (STEP), Collegiate Science and Technology Program (CSTEP) Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) and My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) to establish NYGEAR UP regional outreach with annual programming.
