On March 25 - 26, NYGEAR UP held its Annual State Conference, On Track for Success: Fourth Stop – Making It Count, at the Crowne Plaza in White Plains, NY. We welcomed close to 400 people including 11th grade NYGEAR UP students from the Bronx, Mt. Vernon and Yonkers, local educators, the Superintendents of Schools from Yonkers (Dr. Edwin Quezada) and Mt. Vernon (Dr. Kenneth Hamilton) and NYGEAR UP staff from all NY sites. Gender-specific workshops for our students focused on creating a positive “college and work” mindset, understanding how to pay for college, writing your college essay and learning about the benefits of NY’s college economic opportunity programs. The adult workshops were concentrated on helping immigrant students and students with disabilities navigate the college process and what makes up a strong application. Our keynote speakers, Dr. Dorcey Applyrs and Rashad Jennings were chosen because they have epitomized the conference theme - Making It Count!
